A picture is worth a thousand words, and possibly more. This statement has value because of the use of visual elements such as color, text, and framing, as well as the rhetorical elements of ethos, pathos, and logos. Three pictures that express these elements were taken at the Women’s March this year as well as last year. These pictures are still relevant today because women in America fight for their rights and the opportunity to be given respect as seen in the trending hashtags, #MeToo and #TimesUp. The audience for all three pictures are women of all ages, religions, and races as well as any man who wants to listen to the opinions of these women who fight for their rights. The use of various visual and rhetorical elements in these three photographs adds strength to the argument that women’s voices deserve to be heard. In the city of Dearborn Heights, lives a six year old girl named Madison. She is one of the millions of children growing up in the 21st century with technology at her fingertips. Madison uses technology many times throughout her day in school and at home. This is almost completely different from the way many of us lived through our childhood. Yes, the generation called the Millennials did grow up with technology and are considered digital natives because of the extensive development of technology that started mainly when I began middle school, but there may need to be a new term for the generation being born and growing up here in 2018. Picture #1- Here, Kelsey and her friends are getting lunch in the University’s cafeteria. Kelsey happens to look down at her watch while getting her salad, only to realize that they have ten minutes before their next class. This is a problem since none of the girls have eaten at all today. This is because of all the homework and other classes they had earlier that morning. I chose the image of astronaut John Young saluting to the American flag on the Apollo 16 mission to the Moon in 1972. When I first saw this image, I was amazed. There’s a freaking man on the Moon! This image represents America’s achievement of not only inventing the technology to make it to the Moon, but providing the means for a human to walk on its surface. The subject of the image is an astronaut standing on the Moon, saluting to his country’s flag while standing next to the spacecraft that brought him there. The focal point of this image is the American flag sitting on the surface of the Moon. One may look at this and argue that it seems like Americans have claimed ownership of the Moon. If from the Moon, we are one Earth, why didn’t they place a flag that represents the human species that made this possible as well?
