Response 3: Apollo 16 Moon Landing

I chose the image of astronaut John Young saluting to the American flag on the Apollo 16
mission to the Moon in 1972. When I first saw this image, I was amazed. There’s a freaking
man on the Moon! This image represents America’s achievement of not only inventing the
technology to make it to the Moon, but providing the means for a human to walk on its surface.

The subject of the image is an astronaut standing on the Moon, saluting to his country’s flag
while standing next to the spacecraft that brought him there. The focal point of this image is
the American flag sitting on the surface of the Moon. One may look at this and argue that it
seems like Americans have claimed ownership of the Moon. If from the Moon, we are one
Earth, why didn’t they place a flag that represents the human species that made this possible
as well? Others may say that it represents an accomplishment only America has achieved.

In the foreground and background, we see the Moon’s rocky surface and how it rises and
falls, creating craters. What is left out of the picture is the Earth, which Young can probably
see from his position.

Though this is not the first image of a man on the moon, I think it still represents what
Americans have achieved. Since this was taken a few years after the first moon landing,
our flag being the only one on the Moon can represent the fact that no other country has
made a trip resulting in a man walking on the Moon. This could be due to either the inability
for other countries to make it there or the lack of interest to do so.

The target audience may be to other Americans as a way of saying, “Look what incredible
thing we have done and will continue to do.” I think pathos is present in that statement as well.
It is an extraordinary thing to see and I think every American who saw this image, and
especially the first image of a man on the moon, felt a sense of pride and accomplishment
as well as relief that the men made it there safely.

I think the entire picture itself is symbolic. The American flag stands on the Moon.
A human stands beside it. A piece of technology along with them, that brought those
three men to the moon for the fifth time.
